About the museum
The Museu do Ouro de Travassos opened on 3 March 2001, as the result of a process of promoting the craft of gold-working in this parish of Póvoa de Lanhoso. The project dates back to the 1980s and took a more active shape from 1993, with exhibitions, brochures, guided tours and work with the schools of the municipality.
The idea for the museum came from the efforts of the goldsmith Francisco de Carvalho e Sousa, who over fifty years of activity gathered a collection and documentation. The museum is justified by the fact that Travassos still has a significant number of working craft workshops and traces of many others, and it aims, besides musealising, to revitalise the workshops still active and to help restore those in ruins.
The link to gold-working is the main feature of the village's identity, where generations of goldsmiths have shared the secrets of filigree within their families. The museum is housed in a former goldsmith's workshop and displays tools, gold and silver pieces and some archaeological finds. It also has a community service component aimed at various audiences.
