About the museum

The Museu do Tesouro Real (Royal Treasury Museum) occupies the west wing of the Palácio Nacional da Ajuda (National Palace of Ajuda) in Lisbon, a wing that was never completed during the monarchy. The palace was commissioned by D. José I after the 1755 earthquake, and work began in 1796. The French invasions and the conflicts between liberals and absolutists interrupted construction of this wing, which was only completed to house the museum.

The museum opened in 2022 and was designed as a large safe, about 40 m long and 10 m high, spread over three floors and closed by two steel doors weighing five tonnes each. It brings together more than a thousand objects from the Crown, among them jewels set with about 22,000 precious stones, ceremonial silverware, royal insignia, honorific orders, coins and medals.

The route is divided into thematic collections: Ouro e Diamantes do Brasil (Gold and Diamonds from Brazil), Moedas e Medalhas da Coroa (Crown Coins and Medals), Joias (Jewels), Ordens Honoríficas (Honorific Orders), Insígnias Régias (Royal Insignia), Prata de Aparato da Coroa (Crown Ceremonial Silver), Coleções Particulares (Private Collections), Ofertas Diplomáticas (Diplomatic Gifts), Capela Real (Royal Chapel), Mesa Real (Royal Table) and Viagens do Tesouro (Journeys of the Treasure). The museum was named Museum of the Year 2026.
