About the museum
The Museu do Vinho e da Vinha is located at the Campo Experimental de Viticultura do Arco de São Jorge, in the municipality of Santana, and occupies a restored old winery over an area of about one hectare. The project, supported by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment through the Instituto do Vinho da Madeira, was co-financed by the European INTERREG III-B programme, within the project “Raízes”.
The collection consists mainly of farm implements and tools used in winegrowing, almost all donated by local residents. Three treading presses (lagares) have been restored in the winery, where visitors can see how grapes used to be trodden. There is also an explanatory area on the vine's cycles and on the grape varieties grown on the site, as well as an experimental vineyard, where tasks such as pruning can be observed.
The site is managed by the Casa do Povo do Arco de São Jorge (community association). The visit includes a tasting of regional products, especially honey cake (bolo de mel) and broas, and the shop sells homemade bread, cakes, honey broas and wicker handicrafts.
