About the museum
The museum was created from the donation made by the writer José Maria Ferreira de Castro (1898–1974) to the municipality of Sintra, where he wished his remains to be laid to rest. The donation was approved by the council on 18 April 1973 and the museum opened its doors on 6 June 1982. It closed for works three years later and reopened on 22 July 1992, with new exhibition content.
The route follows the writer's life in chronological order. He was born in Ossela, in the municipality of Oliveira de Azeméis, emigrated to Brazil at the age of twelve and wrote much of his work in Sintra. Rare editions, manuscripts, personal objects and original illustrations for his books can be seen. The study has been reconstructed according to how it was in the writer's house in Lisbon.
The museum also displays portraits and drawings by Eduardo Malta, Bernardo Marques, Cândido Portinari, Jorge Barradas and Júlio Pomar, among others. Ferreira de Castro's documentary archive comprises more than 20,000 documents of correspondence, periodicals, manuscripts and photographs and is accessible to researchers.
