About the museum
The museum originated in 1842, when a collection to store and conserve military material began to be organised in the Royal Army Arsenal, on the initiative of the Barão de Monte Pedral. A decree of 10 December 1851, during the reign of Queen Maria II, gave the building the name Museu de Artilharia (Artillery Museum), which it kept until 1926, when it adopted its current name.
The building, on Largo do Museu de Artilharia, opposite Santa Apolónia station, was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1963. Between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the first director, General José Eduardo Castelbranco, had new rooms decorated with works by artists of the time. In 1998 a space was created in the cellars for temporary exhibitions and cultural events.
The collection numbers about 26,000 pieces, presented in 33 exhibition spaces. Highlights include bronze artillery, the azulejo panels depicting battles from the Christian Reconquista to the First World War, painting and sculpture, as well as weapons such as muskets, pistols and swords, and rooms with 18th-century painted ceilings on military themes.
