About the museum

The Museu Municipal de Arqueologia (Municipal Archaeology Museum) is housed in the building that served as Albufeira's town hall until the end of the 1980s, in the old core of the town. It is a two-storey building with the typical urban architecture of southern Portugal, overlooking the sea. The museum has study, conservation, restoration and storage areas and a small thematic library.

The pieces are linked to the history of Albufeira, from its most remote origins up to the 17th century, and the collection is organised in four units: Prehistory, Roman Period, Islamic Period and Modern Age. The main collection was gathered by Father José Manuel Semedo de Azevedo and includes a Neolithic vessel and architectural elements and artefacts from the Roman villa of Retorta, the necropolis of Morgado da Lameira and the former parish church of Albufeira.

The museum has been part of the Portuguese Museums Network since 2003, as an accredited museum, and of the Algarve Museum Network since 2007, having been one of the museums that created it.
