About the museum
The Casa-Museu João de Deus is in São Bartolomeu de Messines, opposite the parish church, and opened on 25 October 1997. It is not the house where João de Deus was born, but a house adapted for two functions: a museum about the poet and educator, and an educational and artistic centre for children and young people. The building was remodelled in a neo-traditionalist style, with frames of red sandstone (grés) around the doors and windows.
It is a representative house museum with several complementary spaces. It aims to preserve the memory of the place and to present the life and work of João de Deus from three perspectives: as a man, as a poet and as an educator, author of the Cartilha Maternal, published in 1876. It also seeks to revive collective memories and identities through education, the arts and knowledge of the surrounding environment, and to work with children from diverse backgrounds.
In 2017 the museum received a donation of furniture, works of art and first editions that belonged to the poet and educator. One window of the museum has an augmented reality experience linked to the Rota Laranja app.
