About the museum
The Museu Romântico is housed at the Quinta da Macieirinha, also known as the Quinta do Sacramento, a former 18th-century country house that belonged to the Pinto Basto family. The building opened as a museum unit in 1972, with the aim of showing the setting of a 19th-century middle-class house, typical of Porto at that time.
After an architectural intervention by Camilo Rebelo and the restoration of several important pieces in the collection, the museum reopened in 2017. In 2021 a new museum project was launched, centred on the natural world as the driving force of Romantic artistic and literary creation, with the display “Quando a Terra voltar a Brilhar Verde para Ti”. In 2022 came the display “METAMORFOSES – Imanência Vegetal, Mineral e Animal no Espaço Doméstico Romântico”, which brings together many pieces from the municipal collections, some already shown in the former Museu Romântico and in other spaces of the Museu do Porto, and others never shown before.
The museum is part of a green area formed by the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal and the Jardins da Casa Tait, with wide views over the river and the sea. It is part of the network of sites of the Museu do Porto.
