About the museum
The Porto Holocaust Museum was created in 2021 by the Jewish Community of Porto, in partnership with B’nai B’rith International and Holocaust museums from around the world. It is aimed at the general public, especially young people, and focuses on education, the training of educators, exhibitions and support for research.
The museum takes up the challenge that the government project “Nunca Esquecer, em torno da memória do Holocausto” (Never Forget: on the memory of the Holocaust) issued to civil society, and shares documents and objects left by refugees at the Porto synagogue during the Second World War. The space is supported by members of the community whose relatives were victims of the Holocaust.
The exhibition shows Jewish life in Portugal before, during and after the Holocaust, the files of Jewish refugees who passed through Porto in 1940 with transit visas, a replica of an Auschwitz dormitory and a memorial room with the names of the victims of Nazism.
