About the museum

The MUZEU – Pensamento e Arte Contemporânea dst (MUZEU – Thought and Contemporary Art dst) is the first contemporary art museum in Braga and was created by dstgroup, a business group founded by Domingos da Silva Teixeira. Its mission is to promote critical thinking and social reflection through programme cycles centred on contemporary art and, in particular, on the collections of dstgroup and of its chairman, José Teixeira, assembled over more than forty years.

The museum occupies the Palacete Vilhena Coutinho, on the Praça do Município, in the historic centre of Braga. The building was an aristocratic town house of the 18th and 19th centuries and later had other uses. The refurbishment project is by the Braga architect José Carvalho Araújo and turned the interior into a five-storey space, with four floors of exhibition space and an auditorium on the upper floor, linked by a central staircase. On the façade facing the Praça do Município there is an artistic intervention by José Pedro Croft.

The inaugural long-term exhibition, “Sejamos realistas, exijamos o impossível” (Let Us Be Realistic, Let Us Demand the Impossible), curated by Helena Mendes Pereira, reflects the quality and uniqueness of José Teixeira's collections. The museum also has a programme of music, thought, performance and mediation, and a shop. The permanent collection of industry, art, architecture and design is on the dstgroup campus, in Palmeira.
