About the museum
The Tesouro-Museu da Sé de Braga is housed in the former Cabido (Chapter House), an 18th-century building that forms part of the monumental complex of Braga Cathedral. The collection brings together sacred art gathered over a thousand years of Christian life centred on the cathedral: goldsmith's work, sculpture, painting, textiles, furniture and ceramics, as well as objects linked to worship.
The museum was founded in 1930 and reopened to the public on 30 March 2007, after works to rehabilitate and extend the building and renew the permanent exhibition, one of the most far-reaching interventions in its history. The exhibition “Raízes de Eternidade. Jesus Cristo – Uma Igreja” is organised in two sections: the first with pieces on the life of Jesus Christ, from the Annunciation to the Glorious Mysteries, and the second with pieces that tell, in chronological order and through some archbishops, important moments in the history of the Church in Braga. The route ends in the goldsmith's and vestments rooms.
Among the emblematic pieces are the early Christian tomb (5th–6th century), the Cofre de Marfim (ivory casket, 11th century), the chalice and paten of S. Geraldo, the mitre and pontifical gloves of D. Gonçalo Pereira, the chalice of D. Diogo de Sousa, dated 1509, and the organ of D. Luís de Sousa, dated 1685. The complex ticket also allows visits to the chapels, the upper choir and the cathedral itself.
