About the museum
The Pavilhão Julião Sarmento (Julião Sarmento Pavilion) is a compact contemporary art museum that opened in Belém on 4 June 2025. It occupies a former food warehouse owned by the Município de Lisboa, restored and adapted by the architect João Luís Carrilho da Graça; the visual identity is by Pedro Falcão.
The museum houses the collection of the artist Julião Sarmento (Lisbon, 1948–2021), with around 1500 works in painting, drawing, sculpture, video and installation. The collection anchors a multidisciplinary programme that crosses the visual arts, cinema and performance, with an international vocation.
It is directed by Isabel Carlos, and the space is run by EGEAC. The public programme includes cycles of talks, conferences, guided tours and family programmes.
