About the museum
The Centro de Interpretación del Litoral is in La Maruca, in the former coastal defence battery of San Pedro del Mar, a military building restored for its current use. It is run by Santander town council and aims to make the marine environment and the coast of Cantabria better known.
The permanent exhibition “Patrimonio litoral de Cantabria” reviews the geological origin of the coast, its flora and fauna, the uses humans have made of it over time, and the importance of conserving it and raising environmental awareness. A second display, “Costa Quebrada, Parque Geológico”, includes a model of the area and panels on its geology and biodiversity.
As well as the rooms, the centre organises guided visits to the intertidal zone of La Maruca, children's workshops and activities for schoolchildren. The terrace offers panoramic views of the estuary of San Pedro del Mar.
