About the museum

The Museo del Deporte de Cantabria is a permanent exhibition that the Santander town council opened in August 2014 in the foyer of the Palacio de los Deportes, in the Parque de las Llamas. It covers about 280 square metres and aims to convey the values of sport and to pay tribute to the region's sportspeople and clubs.

The exhibition is divided into two sections. The first is a chronological display that traces Cantabrian sport from the first documented games in the 17th century and the origins of modern sport around 1850. It passes through the holidays of Alfonso XIII in Santander, which popularised polo, golf and sailing, and the founding of Racing in 1913, up to the rise of local athletes from 1956 onwards and their Olympic and world successes. The second section is a thematic ring with ten display cases devoted to figures and clubs such as Seve Ballesteros, Paco Gento, Óscar Freire, Real Racing Club or G.D. Teka, as well as native sports such as bolos (traditional skittles) and traineras (racing rowing boats).

The exhibition combines audiovisuals, interactive elements, trophies, equipment, photographs, replicas of boats and 68 medals, including five Olympic gold medals. It also commemorates the feat of the Santander-born aviator Juan Ignacio Pombo, who flew to Mexico City in 1935.
