About the museum
The Colección Roberto Polo, Centro de Arte Moderno y Contemporáneo de Castilla-La Mancha (CORPO), shows the collections gathered by the collector Roberto Polo in Toledo and Cuenca. The Toledo venue occupies the former Convent of Santa Fe, on the Paseo del Miradero, a strategic site at the gates of the citadel that has been coveted since prehistoric times.
On this site, a palace from the time of Abd al-Rahman III was built in the 9th and 10th centuries and extended in the 11th century by the Taifa king al-Ma’mun. It later became a residence of Castilian monarchs — Alfonso X the Wise was born here — then passed to the Order of Calatrava and, in the second half of the 15th century, to the Conceptionist Order, founded by Saint Beatriz de Silva. From 1503 it was occupied by the Commendatresses of Santiago, who built the present convent around a cloister. After the disentailment of church property, it was taken over by the Ursulines of the Sagrada Familia de Loreto, who turned it into a school until its closure in 1973. After a long period of abandonment, the Instituto del Patrimonio Cultural de España restored it in 2003.
The permanent collection brings together works by 171 artists: historical avant-garde movements from northern, central and eastern Europe — the so-called “peripheral avant-gardes” — with names such as Kandinsky, Schlemmer, Schwitters, Moholy-Nagy or Max Ernst, alongside a selection of European and American contemporary creators since the Second World War. CORPO is part of the Sotheby’s Preferred Museums network.
