About the museum

The Museo Postal y Telegráfico (Postal and Telegraph Museum), which belongs to Correos, shows the origins and development of postal and telegraph communications, philately and telephony. It originates in the Museo de Telégrafos founded in 1865, whose first home was on Calle Ancha de San Bernardo in Madrid. The collections moved in 1879 to the former Casa de Postas, in 1909 to the Casa de Correos on Calle Carretas and in 1919 to the Palacio de Comunicaciones on Plaza de Cibeles. After a period in a building on Calle Conde Peñalver, in 1955, the museum opened to the public at the Palacio de Comunicaciones on 9 October 1980.

In 2006 it moved to the Madrid district of Aravaca, under its current name, and remained there until its premises closed at the end of 2023. Since then Correos has been preparing a new home in a building on Calle de la Plata, in the historic centre of Toledo. The refurbishment works were awarded in 2021, but in June 2026 the building was still closed and no opening date had been announced.

The holdings include a philatelic collection with the first Spanish issues and stamps from Cuba, the Philippines and Puerto Rico up to 1898, letter boxes, uniforms, optical and electrical telegraph apparatus (Breguet, Morse), telephones from their origins to the 1920s, and portraits from the 19th and 20th centuries, with works by Sorolla among others. The museum also has a specialised library, established in 1876.
