About the museum
The Ecomuseu de les Valls d’Àneu opened its doors in June 1994 with the aim of researching, conserving, restoring and disseminating the natural and cultural heritage of Esterri and the Àneu valleys, and thereby contributing to the economic and social development of the Pallars Sobirà district. It is registered in the museum register of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
Unlike a traditional museum, it is not confined to a single building: it is organised as a network of heritage centres spread across the villages of the valleys, among them Casa Gassia, Sant Joan d’Isil, Sant Julià d’Unarre, Sant Pere del Burgal, Santa Maria d’Àneu, the La Roseta cheese dairy in Gavàs, the Son monumental complex and the bunkers of La Guingueta d’Àneu. The idea is for visitors to immerse themselves actively in the ways of life of the Pallars at the beginning of the 20th century.
The headquarters is at Casa Gassia, in Esterri d’Àneu: a typical Pallarese house that retains its original structure and shows the family life and domestic space of these Pyrenean valleys in the first half of the 20th century. There the household tasks, the sharing of responsibilities and the changes that have come down to the present day are explained. Visits to Casa Gassia are always guided and last about 35 minutes.
The ecomuseum also organises exhibitions, themed experiences (botanical, detective-style, family and night-time), dramatised visits and activities to revive Pyrenean crafts. In 2020 it received the Creu de Sant Jordi for its work in recovering and disseminating the ethnography of the Àneu valleys and the Pallars.
