About the museum
The Casa Amatller is one of the jewels of Catalan Modernisme, the work of Josep Puig i Cadafalch for the chocolate maker Antoni Amatller. It combines Gothic inspiration with a stepped façade of Flemish character, and its interior is notable for its stained glass, its ceramics and Catalan motifs such as Sant Jordi and the dragon. The noble floor keeps the former family home, and the ground floor has a café-shop where the Amatller photographic archive can also be seen.
The Institut Amatller d'Art Hispànic was founded in 1941 on the initiative of Teresa Amatller, who wished to fulfil her father's testamentary wish. Its first technical director was the art historian Josep M. Gudiol i Ricart, who took the Frick Collection in New York as his model. In September 1941 the Arxiu Mas, a photographic archive of artistic heritage founded by Adolf Mas, was acquired; it forms part of the institute's photographic library together with a specialised library.
Between 2009 and 2015 the noble floor was restored to open as a house museum. Today it is visited with a guide or with an audio guide, and the foundation also offers school visits, family activities, chocolate tastings and a visit to the Amatller family tomb in the Cementiri de Montjuïc. The institute keeps its archive and library open to researchers.
