About the museum
The Museu Tàpies occupies the building of the former publishing house Montaner y Simón, designed in 1879 by Lluís Domènech i Montaner and built between 1880 and 1882. It was the first building in the Eixample to combine industrial typology and technology, with exposed brick and iron, within the urban fabric. Its façade mixes classical features with Islamic and Mozarabic influences.
In June 1990 it opened as the Fundació Antoni Tàpies, after restoration and adaptation by Roser Amadó and Lluís Domènech Girbau. That same year Tàpies himself crowned the building with the sculpture “Núvol i cadira”, a chair emerging from a large cloud that evokes meditation and aesthetic contemplation. In 1997 the building was declared a historic monument.
Between 2008 and 2010 the architects Ábalos+Sentkiewicz carried out a second refurbishment to meet current accessibility standards and recover the original industrial character; in 2010 the work “Mitjó” was installed on the terrace.
The museum holds more than 2,100 works reflecting almost seventy years of Tàpies' output, including paintings, drawings, objects, sculptures and graphic works, largely from the donation of the artist and Teresa Barba when the foundation was created. From 13 October 2026 the museum closes temporarily for refurbishment.
