About the museum
The Museo Africano Mundo Negro is located in the Madrid headquarters of the Comboni Missionaries, on Calle de Arturo Soria. According to Madrid tourist guides, it was created around 1985 on the initiative of the congregation. Its collection comes from the places where the missionaries are present in Africa, from private donations and from some purchases.
The route is a journey across the continent. Maps explain African prehistory, ancient kingdoms and empires, and the languages and peoples of Africa. Alongside them are weapons, musical instruments, statues, figures, masks, religious objects, items of clothing and everyday adornments, complemented by photographs and engravings that place the pieces in their geographic and historical context.
The collection of masks and the ritual statuary are considered especially valuable. Visits are always guided, and the museum also runs activities for schools, such as a storytelling session for early childhood pupils.
