About the museum

The Colección de Arte Sacro is an initiative of the Autonomous City of Melilla, developed by the Fundación Melilla Ciudad Monumental with the collaboration of the Diocese of Málaga and the Episcopal Vicariate of Melilla, and supported by the city’s brotherhoods and confraternities. Its purpose is to gather and publicise the religious heritage and historical memory of Melilla’s Christian community.

It is housed in the first fortified enclosure of Melilla la Vieja, in a 17th-century building attached to the church of the Purísima Concepción and linked to a former Capuchin convent. Over its history it has had religious, military and penal uses. The exhibition is on the ground floor, and from it you can access the Cuevas del Conventico.

The collections come from churches and parishes, congregations, confraternities, brotherhoods and private individuals. The route is linear and educational, organised into four areas: liturgy, devotion, processions and treasury. The best-known piece is the Custodia del Sol (Sun Monstrance), a goldsmith’s work from the late 17th century.
