About the museum

The Fundación Gaselec, a private non-profit cultural institution, was created in Melilla in 2004. In 2018 it opened the Museo Eléctrico de Melilla in the premises of Gaselec, devoted to the history of electrical energy in the city throughout the 20th century.

The collection brings together devices and objects that brought electricity to Melilla's homes and industries and that technological developments have made obsolete. The route runs from a “Catecismo Histórico” of 1786 to pieces from the 1980s, and is organised into four sections: medical and household appliances, measuring instruments, two transformer stations and a workshop with a forge; high-voltage switches, meters, insulators and power transformers; typewriters, teleprinters and telefax machines; and the company's account books from 1914 onwards, the television studio of Cablemel TV and a printing press donated by the Tercio Gran Capitán 1.º de La Legión (Legion regiment). The foundation also presents a more recent collection on the history of 20th-century radio communication.
