About the museum

The museum occupies the church of San Román in Toledo, first mentioned as a parish in 1125. The renovation promoted by Archbishop Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada gave the church its present form, and it was consecrated in 1221. It ceased to be a parish in 1842 and was later declared a Monumento Histórico Artístico (Historic-Artistic Monument).

The museum was created by decree on 24 April 1969 and opened to the public in 1971; its displays were renewed in 2014. It is dedicated to Visigothic culture and Late Antiquity in the province of Toledo, with finds from the necropolis of Carpio de Tajo and other Visigothic sites.

Among the pieces are replicas of the votive crowns of Guarrazar, whose originals are kept in other museums, and objects such as a table leg, a fragment of a capital, a belt buckle, a candlestick, a fragment of a sarcophagus and a tremissis (gold coin). The building itself retains medieval mural paintings and an altarpiece attributed to Diego Velasco de Ávila el Viejo.
