About the museum

The museum is part of the monumental complex of the Real Colegiata de Santa María de Roncesvalles, a former pilgrims' hospital on the Camino de Santiago, which has welcomed walkers for centuries after the climb up from the lower valleys of Navarre. It holds the sacred art of the collegiate church and also houses its library.

The collection brings together sculpture, painting, textiles, coins, old books and manuscripts, but its most important holding is its goldsmiths' work. Among the best-known pieces are the so-called Esmeralda de Miramamolín, linked by tradition to the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (1212) and to the coat of arms of Navarre, the Evangeliary of Roncesvalles with its Romanesque cover, and the reliquary known as the Ajedrez de Carlomagno. In painting, notable works include a triptych of the Crucifixion from a northern European school and a Holy Family with the Infant Saint John, attributed to Luis de Morales “el Divino”.

The museum is visited as part of the tour of the complex, which also includes the Gothic church of Santa María, the cloister with the chapter house and the tomb of Sancho VII the Strong, the church of Santiago and the Silo de Carlomagno.
