About the museum

The Veterinaria Militar museum collection is housed in one of the departments of the Centro Militar de Veterinaria de la Defensa in Madrid. Its origins go back to 1945, when the first centenary of the Military Veterinary Corps (1845–1945) was marked with scientific and social events and a temporary exhibition of regulation materials and biological products from the former Laboratorio y Parque Central de Veterinaria Militar (Central Military Veterinary Laboratory and Depot).

When that exhibition ended, the materials were stored in the warehouse of the former Parque Central, on Calle de Invencibles, near the Puente de Toledo. In 1984 the new premises of the Acuartelamiento Coronel Molina (Coronel Molina Barracks) were occupied and, between 1984 and 1986, the library was created and the holdings that form the basis of the current collection were gathered in an annex room.

This is a collection devoted to the applied and health sciences, and it is the only one in Spain that shows the evolution of military veterinary medicine up to the present day. The first room displays instruments and laboratory equipment, 130 veterinary pharmacy jars and food inspection equipment. The second brings together surgical instruments, teaching models dating from before 1945 and field equipment for disinfection and biological control. The third is devoted to hoof care and the art of farriery, with field forges dating from 1917 and orthopaedic horseshoes. Other spaces show a hall of illustrious men, a gallery of directors and uniforms.
