About the museum
During renovation works at Carpetana station, on Metro de Madrid line 6, fossil remains from the Miocene were found in 2008. With them an interpretation space was created inside the station itself, which is part of the offer of Museos Metro de Madrid.
The exhibition is arranged in two vertical fossil sites that recreate the landscape of two different moments. The first shows the environment of more than 15 million years ago, with remains mainly of mastodons of the species Gomphotherium angustidens and a reconstruction of a deer called Heteroprox.
The second recreates a landscape from about 14 million years ago, with fauna such as the oso-perro (bear-dog), the oso-lobo (bear-wolf), a giant tortoise, rhinoceroses, a wild boar and a feline in a tree. A mural explains the prehistoric fauna and the excavation work.
