About the museum
The cultural association “Bonsái Burgos” and the Villagonzalo Pedernales Town Council opened the museum on 13 September 2008. It is the first permanent bonsai museum in Castilla y León, and it is part of the Casa Consistorial building in the centre of the village.
The site covers about 400 m² and includes a minimalist pond, about 60 bonsai and many suiseki (“stones for contemplation”, which suggest landscapes) and kusamono. The exhibition space is outdoors, protected by a shade-netting framework, and displays around 50 trees on pedestals and natural stone slabs emerging from beds of river pebbles. A climate-controlled greenhouse protects the most delicate specimens, and an adjoining space is used for repotting and other conservation work.
The Casa Consistorial also has a multipurpose room for courses, meetings and demonstrations, so the museum also works as a centre for promoting bonsai technique. Each type of species has its own independent automatic watering, lighting and camera surveillance.
