About the museum
The Museo Histórico Militar de Burgos was founded to bring together and preserve objects of historical and cultural value from units that were disbanded or moved from the former Región Militar Pirenaica Occidental (Western Pyrenean Military Region) after the Army’s reorganisation of 1985. It opened on 11 June 1987 in the noble part of the former Army Engineers Academy, today the headquarters of the San Marcial Division.
On 16 May 2014 the museum opened in its current home, the Palacio de Capitanía, and on 26 May 2017 it was enlarged with a new room. It belongs to the Instituto de Historia y Cultura Militar del Ejército de Tierra (Institute of Military History and Culture of the Army).
The route begins with the room “Burgos Plaza Militar”, which has a large model of Burgos Castle and the original model of Juan de Ávalos’ monument to the Armed Forces. Next come “La Vida Militar”, with edged weapons and firearms, uniforms, decorations and an Enigma cipher machine used in the building during the Civil War, and “El Ejército en Burgos”, with the chest of the San Marcial No. 22 Regiment. Other rooms are devoted to war campaigns, portable firearms, and flags and standards.
