About the museum
The museum displays the main works of Marceliano Santa María (1866–1952), a painter from Burgos and one of the most important Castilian artists of the modern era. It is municipally owned and free of charge, and occupies the first floor of the remains of the former monastery of San Juan, on the Camino de Santiago.
The collection of more than 200 works shows the various genres the artist practised. Among his best-known paintings are “Angélica y Medoro”, “El triunfo de la Santa Cruz” and “Burgalesa”. He is known as the “Painter of Castile” for his many landscapes, which are close in sensibility to the literature of the Generation of '98, who regarded Castile and its landscapes as the heart of Spain.
