About the museum
The museum's origins go back to 1840, when the town council agreed to build display cases to preserve the flags captured from the British navy in the 1797 battle against Nelson. The present Neoclassical building was erected in 1929 by the architect Eladio Laredo and has ten busts of notable Tenerife personalities on its façade. It is on calle José Murphy, behind the former convent of San Francisco and below the Plaza del Príncipe, and was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1962.
The museum is arranged in fourteen rooms with its own holdings and a deposit of works from the Museo del Prado. The collection spans from 16th-century Flemish painting to 20th-century painting, and also includes sculpture and decorative arts.
Among the most notable works are the “Tríptico de Nava y Grimón” by the Flemish painter Pieter Coecke, “San Andrés” by José de Ribera, and “Orfeo”, a deposit from the Prado. There are also pieces by Federico de Madrazo, Dióscoro Puebla and Joaquín Sorolla, and by Canarian artists such as Cristóbal Hernández de Quintana, Gaspar de Quevedo and Manuel González Méndez.
Alongside the permanent exhibition, the museum organises guided visits of the museum and of the city's heritage, book presentations, lecture cycles and music recitals.
