About the museum
The museum in Nerva emerged after the first democratic elections of 1978. In 1979 the First National Vázquez Díaz Salon was held, a painting competition that reached its fifth edition in 1983. The works acquired at the salon and other municipal proposals formed a collection of contemporary art that served as the basis for founding the museum, which opened in May 1999.
The building, the work of the architect Julio Sánchez Prieto, stands on the Plaza de Hijos Ilustres, opposite the town hall, and combines brick and copper. It offers more than 1,000 square metres of exhibition space and, throughout the year, temporary shows of painting and photography.
The collection brings together works by Daniel Vázquez Díaz, born in Nerva, from different stages of his painting, among them the canvases of “Poemas del Descubrimiento”, prior to his frescoes at the Monasterio de La Rábida. It also holds works by José María Labrador, a group of contemporary paintings from the eighties, and painting, sculpture and photography by local artists or artists linked to Nerva.
