About the museum

The Museu d’Art Frederic Marès de Montblanc holds a personal collection of religious paintings and sculptures from the 16th to the 19th centuries, which the sculptor Frederic Marès (1893–1991) donated to the town. The museum opened in 1979 in the former Hospital de Sant Marçal, where it remained until 1998.

In 1982 it became a monographic section of the Museu Comarcal de la Conca de Barberà. At the end of the 1990s it moved to the Presó Nova building, Montblanc's former prison, on Carrer Pedrera, which it shares with the Centre d’Interpretació de l’Art Rupestre de les Muntanyes de Prades.

The works are presented in context, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary period, and are complemented by pieces by other artists associated with the Conca de Barberà. One of the most notable works is “Joventut”, a bronze female figure by Marès that represents modernism.
