About the museum
Museu Terra belongs to the Fundació Carulla, founded in 1973 by Lluís Carulla and Maria Font to promote the Catalan language and culture. The museum opened in 1988 and today describes itself as a cultural centre that preserves, generates and shares knowledge and promotes reflection on a sustainable social transformation from the rural world.
It is located in l’Espluga de Francolí, in the comarca of the Conca de Barberà, midway between Lleida and Tarragona, at the foot of the Poblet forest and the Prades mountains. The permanent exhibition occupies 5,500 m² and presents tangible and intangible heritage that explains what life in the countryside was like before the second industrial revolution.
The collection brings together more than 5,000 inventoried objects, along with a large photographic, audiovisual, documentary and sound archive of ethnological character. A selection can be viewed online. The museum also has an ethnobotanical garden with more than 200 species and an agro-ecological vegetable garden, holds the EMAS environmental accreditation and family tourism labels, and maintains a second venue, the Sala Barcelona, in the Poblenou district.
