About the museum
The Museo de Medicina Infanta Margarita arose from an initiative of the Real Academia Nacional de Medicina de España. Its statutes, approved on 27 May 2011, included the aim of promoting and developing a Spanish museum of medicine. The project was driven by Professor Manuel Díaz-Rubio García, a former president of the Academy, and with the approval of the Royal Household it was named after the Infanta Margarita de Borbón.
On 23 February 2012, at an event presided over by the Infanta, 18 scientific and health institutions joined the project. The museum’s commission initially sought its own venue with space for exhibitions and storage, but the economic crisis prevented a large project from going ahead.
While it has no permanent home, the museum shows temporary exhibitions at the Academy’s headquarters on the calle de Arrieta. Its collections include stethoscopes, which are presented as probably the largest in Europe, as well as microscopes, early modern pharmacy, anaesthesia and electrotherapy. Notable pieces include an electrocardiograph, a Marey sphygmograph, a birthing chair and a Ritter dental unit.
