About the museum
Apollonio Paul Pessina (1879–1958), a sculptor and painter from Ligornetto, was born in the house that now bears his name. His sister Bianca donated the building to the town of Mendrisio. After a targeted renovation, it was inaugurated as a house of culture in 2003. It preserves several of the artist's works in a permanent exhibition on the first floor, as well as his library and archive.
Until 2013, the house showed exhibitions by regional artists for ten years. Since 2015, following the merger of the municipality of Ligornetto with Mendrisio, it has taken a new direction: it is an exhibition venue for young Ticino photographers. Casa Pessina is run by the Museo d’arte Mendrisio, which looked back on ten years of photography in these rooms with an anniversary exhibition. The photography exhibitions often enter into a dialogue with Pessina's sculptures.
