About the museum
The sculptor Natale Albisetti was born in Stabio in 1863, studied at the Brera Academy in Milan and, from 1887, at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and lived for a long time in the 18th arrondissement of Paris. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salons and created, among other things, allegorical statues for the Polytechnic in Zurich, sculptures for the Federal Palace in Bern and the monument to Ticino independence in Bellinzona. His work "Amor materno" attracted attention at the National Exhibition in Geneva in 1896 and was purchased by the Confederation.
Albisetti died in Stabio on 2 July 1923 and bequeathed to the municipality the entire contents of his studios in Paris and Stabio, including some seventy plaster works (busts, sketches, reliefs), his library, and paintings, drawings and photographs.
On 24 March 2018 the municipality opened the Spazio Albisetti, an exhibition space for this legacy. It shows a changing selection of the original plaster models in a simple setting furnished in the style of the period, including well-known works such as "Amor materno" and a portrait of his mother. Further works are kept in a depot that is not open to the public. The small plaster cast gallery is intended to become a point of reference for research on and promotion of Albisetti's work.
