About the museum
Altenrhein airfield on the southern shore of Lake Constance has a long aviation history: shortly after the First World War a plant of the aircraft manufacturer Dornier was established here, where flying boats were built. In 1994 a small group of enthusiasts founded the Fliegermuseum Altenrhein, and in July 2019, exactly 50 years after the first Moon landing, the new FFA Museum opened on the same site – a large, modern museum of aviation and automotive history.
The concept links aircraft and automobiles: the museum draws on Frederick Henry Royce, who developed the first aircraft engine out of automobile engineering, and on around 5,000 square metres it shows, alongside historic aircraft, high-quality Rolls-Royce models and other impressive vehicles of the 20th century. A large proportion of the aircraft and vehicles are still airworthy or roadworthy and are maintained on site, so visitors can watch the work being done.
The museum includes the Jet & Prop Heritage, which looks after the long-term preservation of historic Swiss jets and propeller aircraft and, as a competence centre for historic aircraft, passes on old expertise to younger staff. In addition to the exhibition there are flight and car simulators, a Carrera track and event spaces such as a roof terrace, an event hangar and a glass auditorium.
