About the museum
Ernst and Hildy Beyeler assembled a collection over more than five decades spanning from Impressionism and Classical Modernism to contemporary art, which became the foundation established in 1982 and whose museum opened in 1997 in a new building by Renzo Piano. The house with its large windows opening onto the park and landscape towards Tüllinger Hill quickly became one of the most visited art museums in Switzerland. The founders' concern was to make art accessible to everyone and particularly to inspire young people.
The collection today comprises over 400 works. Its centerpiece is painting with works by Cézanne, Monet, van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse, Miró and Rothko; complemented by sculptures including works by Giacometti and Louise Bourgeois, as well as ethnographic objects from Africa, Oceania and Alaska. A dedicated conservation team has cared for the works since 2001. Large temporary exhibitions with loans supplement the collection.
From 26 September 2026, the expanded ensemble opens in stages. Alongside the Beyeler Museum, three new buildings by Peter Zumthor are being constructed: the Wyss Museum, the Ammann Pavilion and the Erlen Torhaus. These are joined by restored historic buildings with workshops for art mediation, a music salon, project space and orangery, as well as a protected historic park. This doubles both the park area and exhibition space for the Beyeler Collection.
