About the museum

The Birsfelder Museum is housed in Birsfelden's oldest schoolhouse on Schulstrasse, which was built in 1853. Since 1991 the building has served exclusively as a museum. It is run by the museum commission of the municipal council, which is responsible for selecting and supporting the artists, curating the exhibitions and organising the accompanying events.

The museum has no permanent exhibition on village history, but regularly shows art exhibitions and historical-thematic exhibitions on Birsfelden; there are also concerts, readings and other events. Opening hours depend on the respective exhibition.

The museum includes a historical archive that collects and preserves documents, photographs, films, objects and art relating to the history of Birsfelden, including material on the construction of the Birsfelden power plant in the years 1950 to 1954. Anyone wishing to donate evidence of days gone by or with questions about local history can contact the museum.
