About the museum
The Fondation Herzog came into being in 2002 out of the wish to make the roughly 300,000 photographs of the collection of Ruth and Peter Herzog accessible to the public. The collector couple had assembled the holdings over decades with great expertise and much personal commitment, and were honoured for it with the Basel-Stadt Culture Prize in 2000 and an honorary doctorate from the University of Basel in 2002.
The foundation sees itself as a “laboratory for photography”. Its collection tells the story of people in industrial society from the invention of the medium in 1839 to about 1970: pioneering images, professional, artistic and private photographs, plus examples of all analogue processes. An extensive specialist library complements the holdings.
Besides archiving and conservation, the Fondation organises workshops, conferences and tours, publishes books and shows exhibitions in its own rooms on Leimenstrasse as well as at other institutions. The collection, library and expertise are also open to schools, universities and museums for teaching and research. Together with the photo collection in the Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron Kabinett, the house forms a close partnership.
