About the museum
Gameorama sees itself as Switzerland's only interactive games museum. The idea arose in 2018 as part of a call for proposals by the City of Lucerne for the Dreilinden site; the concept made the shortlist but was not selected. The founding team pursued the project anyway and opened the museum on 27 June 2020 in the Neustadt district.
In November 2023 the museum moved to the former post office building at Hirschengraben 49. The new location offers about three times the exhibition space and more than 50 additional exhibits; new themed worlds on handhelds, games of skill and strategy games and Swiss games were added. The spaces were later expanded further, including a larger arcade area, a virtual reality arena and a conference room.
The permanent exhibition ranges from ancient board games such as Senet through pinball machines, arcade cabinets and computers to consoles and handhelds; a seven-metre-long timeline traces the development of gaming culture. All machines are set to free play. The museum is complemented by a board game café with several hundred games, a shop and escape rooms.
