About the museum
The museum is run by the Kunstgesellschaft Luzern, which was founded in 1819 as a forum for artists and art enthusiasts and set out to create spaces for exhibitions. The Kunstmuseum itself was established in 1932; today it is located on the fourth floor of the Culture and Convention Centre KKL, built by Jean Nouvel, with its entrance on the railway station side.
The museum sees itself as open to current social issues and shows around ten exhibitions a year, three at a time: international temporary exhibitions, a collection presentation newly conceived each year, and first solo exhibitions by emerging artists. Historical highlights included the 1935 show "Thesis, Antithesis and Synthesis" with Kandinsky, Miró and Picasso, the contemporary art exhibitions of the 1970s under Jean-Christophe Ammann, and presentations of Jeff Wall, Andy Warhol and Cindy Sherman in the 1990s.
The collection extends from the Renaissance to the present and focuses on Swiss art, art of the 1970s and the documentation of the temporary exhibitions. For several years the museum has worked purposefully on accessibility and inclusion, for example with plain language and quiet time slots; the director is Fanni Fetzer.
