About the museum

The museum was founded in 1986 as the 'house for constructive and concrete art' in Zurich's Seefeld district. It builds on the Zurich Concretes around Max Bill, Richard Paul Lohse, Camille Graeser, and Verena Loewensberg, who shaped constructive-concrete art from the 1930s to 1950s, combining this heritage with contemporary art. In 2001, the house moved to the ewz substation Selnau, a transformer station designed by Hermann Herter from 1930 to 1934, once used for the city's power supply, decommissioned in 1998, and under monument protection.

After almost 25 years, the museum had to leave this location because an energy center is being built there. In May 2025, it moved into the east wing of the Löwenbräukunst complex at Limmatstrasse 268, which Gigon Guyer Partner Architekten renovated; the interior design is by Fuhrimann/Hächler. There are three exhibition rooms, a shop, and café. Additional exhibition rooms and offices in the west wing (Limmatstrasse 270) were planned for 2026.

Each year the museum shows three to six changing exhibitions that bring historical positions from Russian Constructivism, Bauhaus, Op Art, Minimal Art, and Conceptual Art into dialogue with contemporary works. A centerpiece of the collection is Fritz Glarner's Rockefeller Dining Room from 1963/64, a room designed according to his concept of Relational Painting, which the Paul Büchi Foundation donated.
