About the museum
The Schweizer Finanzmuseum opened in June 2017 at the headquarters of SIX Group in the Zürich-West district of Zürich. It sees itself as the first museum in Switzerland devoted entirely to money and financial markets, and it is run by SIX.
The basis is a collection of historical securities built up by a foundation established in 2001. It comprises around 10,000 shares and bonds from over 150 countries and covers the period from the 16th century to today. From 2003 to 2016 the collection was on view as the Museum Wertpapierwelt in Olten. With the move to Zürich it became part of the new Finanzmuseum.
The permanent exhibition, covering about 300 square meters, uses original pieces, video sequences and touchscreen animations to explain how stock exchanges work, what a share is, and how the modern financial economy developed. In addition there are workshops, guided tours and online exhibitions on topics such as trade history or the economy of the 1920s. From December 2026 the house will be temporarily closed for the redesign of the exhibitions.
