About the museum
The half-timbered house at Baslerstrasse 48 was built in 1624/25 and served for almost three centuries as the residence of the Vogt and Gürtler families. In 1918 the canton bought it and set up a police station; from 1925 to 1956 it was used as emergency housing and a schoolroom. The municipality acquired the building in 1956 and had it restored by 1963.
The local history museum opened here in 1968, founded by the physician and art historian Josef Martin Lusser. It was devoted to rural domestic culture, crafts and archaeological finds. It closed in 2015. Between 2017 and 2024, the associations Fachwerk, Piano di Primo and Landkino used the house as an interim venue and built up a cultural program of guest performances and their own productions.
Since 2025 the house has reopened as "Museum Allschwil, Haus für Kultur und Geschichte": a museum and cultural center under one roof, run by the municipality and supported by volunteers. The municipal collection consists of three parts – the ethnographic Lusser collection, the artworks and furniture of the Augustin collection, and the Tschan weapons collection – and is inventoried as a cultural asset of regional significance. Renovation of the half-timbered house is planned for 2029, after which it is to be redesigned.
