About the museum
The Executioner's Museum in Sissach opened in 1999 and sees itself as the first and only museum in Switzerland devoted to the work of the executioner. Across three floors it shows an extensive collection of penal equipment from past times, including shackles, instruments of torture and execution devices, complemented by documentation and pictorial material.
The museum's website additionally explains how justice was administered and punishment carried out: from the office of the executioner and torturer to punishments of honour and corporal punishment, dungeon and court, to the death penalty, the Basel place of execution, the guillotine, and the last execution in Switzerland and in Basel-Landschaft.
