About the museum

The Waldenburgerbahn opened in 1880 as a narrow-gauge steam railway between Liestal and Waldenburg and for many decades was the most important means of transport in the Waldenburg Valley. On October 25, 1953, the first electric train began a new era, which meant the end of scheduled service for the steam locomotives.

Steam locomotive No. 5 «Gedeon Thommen», delivered in 1902, then stood for a long time as a monument at Liestal station. Volunteers returned it to working order from 1975, and for the railway's 100th anniversary in June 1980 it ran again on the main line. When the gauge of the Waldenburgerbahn was widened, the historic steam train could no longer be used. On October 22, 2018, the locomotive, passenger car B48 and a small freight car moved into the new engine shed at Talhaus station in Bubendorf, which was completed in 2019.

The site is run by the Verein Dampfzug Waldenburgerbahn (steam train association), founded in 2012. Since August 2020 it has also included a 1:4 scale live-steam model railway, a replica of locomotive No. 6 «Waldenburg» that runs around the engine shed.
