About the museum
For over two centuries, Matzendorf in the Solothurn Thal was a center of ceramics production. From 1798 the manufactory made faience and earthenware; later, fireproof brown tableware and stove tiles were added. In the "Von der Mühll" era (1927–1959), the artist Benno Geiger headed the art ceramics department from 1934 to 1959. Until 2004 there were also productions by the Tonwarenfabrik Aedermannsdorf and the Rössler AG.
The association Freunde der Matzendorfer Keramik (Friends of Matzendorf Ceramics) was founded in 1988 to collect, research and exhibit objects from Matzendorf and Aedermannsdorf. Since 2006 the Keramikmuseum has been housed in the former parsonage at Kirchstrasse 20. Together with the Maria-Felchlin collection, it is considered the most important ceramics collection in the canton of Solothurn; about 70 loans from national museums complement its own holdings.
The association also takes care of the scholarly study of the collection, for example with the 2022 publication "100 typische Matzendorfer Keramiken 1798–1845". In 2024 it received the Solothurn cantonal award for cultural heritage care.
