About the museum
The “Feld” in Reigoldswil is a three-part farmhouse built in 1764, in which at times around thirty people from two families lived. Later an extension for looms was added: in the 19th century, silk ribbon weaving (Posamenterei) shaped the valley, after which the watch industry replaced this trade. Last of all, two elderly bachelors lived in the house; one of them, Johann Rudolf Plattner, known as “Feldruedi”, died in 1978.
He bequeathed his half of the farmhouse, together with the threshing floor, meadows and woodland, to the secondary school, on the condition that a regional local history museum be established and the house kept accessible as unchanged as possible. The Johann Rudolf Plattner Foundation was founded for this purpose; since 1983 the house has been run as a museum. In 1984 the Gesellschaft zum Feld was formed, which took over operations and enlivens the house with events, markets and guided tours.
On display are a farmhouse parlour with tiled stove, a kitchen with hearth and a working bread oven, an exhibition room, a ribbon-weaver's room with a restored loom, a wheelwright's workshop, as well as the tools of a shoemaker and a watchmaker. The loom is put into operation on open days. A comprehensive renovation and a gentle extension with a cultural hall in the barn are planned.
