About the museum
The treasury of the St. Martin parish church in Altdorf is among the richest and most precious in Central Switzerland. It comprises golden and silver liturgical vessels, crucifixes, reliquaries and candlesticks from about 1500 to the early 19th century. The main part is an important group of Gothic works, complemented by pieces from the Renaissance and the Baroque. The objects come from Uri, Swiss and European goldsmiths and recall the town's former wealth on the Gotthard trade route.
The historic vestments and church garments made of precious silk fabrics with elaborate embroidery and needle painting are equally worth seeing. The museum opened in 1982 and is housed in the cultural property protection room of the parish center. Since 2009, art objects from the former Capuchin monastery in Altdorf, the oldest Capuchin monastery in Switzerland, have also been on display there.
